Finding Balance Through the Fall Holidays

The holiday season is a time for connection, celebration, and delicious food. But with all the festivities, it’s easy to fall into the “all or nothing” mindset — either restricting beforehand or feeling guilt afterward. This year, we’re encouraging a new approach: finding balance and enjoyment in every bite and moment.

Here are some of our Nourish dietitians’ favorite tips to help you feel your best this season:

🍽️ Mindful Eating

“Get rid of the ‘all or nothing’ mentality. Enjoy the foods you’ve been looking forward to — but remember, you don’t have to finish it all!” — Brooke Miller MS, RDN, LDN

“Scan all the foods available before starting to fill your plate.” — Caroline Kobrin MS, RDN, LDN, CSOWM

“Find a seat to eat rather than standing around the table or counter.” — Sara Steere MS, RDN, LDN

“Choose foods you really love and savor them. Eat the foods you’ve been looking forward to guilt-free!” — Marissa Spurka MS, RDN, LDN

“Honor your fullness. Slow down to savor your food and take time to check in with your hunger and fullness cues. If feeling full, consider making a to-go plate with the items you did not get to try.” — Katie Sorokach RDN, LDN

Gentle Nutrition

“Sign up to bring a salad or vegetable dish to the holiday party to ensure veggies are available!” — Ana Vielledent MCN, RDN, LDN

“Try not to show up to holiday events overly hungry and at risk of overeating heavier foods.” — Francine Ichim MS, RDN, LDN

“Don’t forget your fiber! Try to balance holiday meals with fiber-rich options like whole grains, veggies, or nuts and seeds to aid digestion and regularity.” — Mary Davis RDN, LDN

Joyful Movement

“Look for opportunities to move your body after a larger meal to help with digestion and blood sugar balance — think a family walk, active group game, or helping with clean-up.” — Jackie Shemaria MS, RDN, LDN

“Over the holidays, we spend so much special time together—try spending some of this time being active! Encourage joyful movement as a family, like a walk, hike, or playing outside.” — Alison Martin RDN, LDN

Gentle on the Gut

“Help manage IBS-like symptoms or a sensitive stomach by extending kindness to yourself and your gut through the holidays. Plan ahead, stay hydrated, and express any specific needs for food, rest, or movement.” — Julie Newton RDN, LDN, RYT

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to choose between enjoyment and nourishment this holiday season — both can coexist. Focus on what makes you feel good physically and emotionally, honor your hunger and fullness cues, and remember: one meal or one day won’t derail your progress.
